The Very Best of the Pogues brings together the exhilaration, tenderness and rough humour that made the band’s music so distinctive. Irish traditional influences meet the urgency of punk, but the collection’s strength lies in its songwriting: vivid characters, observed places and emotional detail that survives even the rowdiest arrangements.
“Dirty Old Town” and “The Irish Rover” show how naturally The Pogues could make inherited songs their own. “Sally MacLennane”, “Streams of Whiskey” and “If I Should Fall from Grace with God” supply momentum and communal energy, with instruments pushing and answering one another around Shane MacGowan’s unmistakable voice. “Fiesta” adds a different rhythmic flavour without losing that sense of celebration.
The quieter moments are just as important. “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and “A Rainy Night in Soho” reveal the precision and compassion beneath MacGowan’s unruly image. “Fairytale of New York”, with Kirsty MacColl, turns conflicting voices into a powerful miniature drama, while “Summer in Siam” offers a gentler, dreamlike contrast.
Closing with “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”, the collection leaves room for grief and memory alongside pleasure and defiance. It provides a introduction to a band whose songs remain inseparable from the lives, cities and stories they evoke.
