ace have released several themed compilations of material from tom wenzel's california-based downey records: instrumentals, r&b, rock'n'garage and surf music. many tracks from the downey vaults do not fit any handy genre in this way, so they felt it was time to bring these together with some of the bigger hits creating a comprehensive overview, the downey story. here is the first ever recording and solo outing of barry white under the name lee barry. the track that has done so well over the years on the northern scene, 'do it' by pat powdrill makes a welcome appearance away from the kent label. the same goes for carl burnett's 'jerk baby jerk'. also featured is some early doo wop, fresh to cd, plus the great revels return with 'comanche'. this made an appearance on the soundtrack to pulp fiction and is on the soundtrack of the exiles, a grammy award-winning cult film recently revived and re-issued on dvd. there are also some previously unreleased gems, right next to huge hits like 'pipeline'. yes, that's here. for fans of obscure 60s psych we've found another unreleased track from the last word. and that is the last word, except to say that some of these downey sides on original 45s are now getting hard to find and fetching high prices at auction, like bud & kathy's 'hang it out to dry'.
