Waiting for Instruction marks 30 years since Kid Acne first took the name in 1996. Rather than a full retrospective, this book heads back to the formative period where everything began, tracing the ideas, scenes and habits that shaped the work from the start.
Kid Acne's practice grew in the overlap of rave, hip-hop, independent music, handmade fanzines, DIY culture and graffiti. It captures a time of experimentation and self-organisation, before Street Art had become a recognised category.
Through drawings, sketchbooks, early zines, record sleeves, posters and archival material, Waiting for Instruction follows the development of a visual language that still evolves today. Rather than monumentalising the past, it looks closely at the conditions that made the work possible.
