What’s A Heaven For? is the long-awaited debut album from Hallan. Across it’s twelve propulsive tracks, the Portsmouth based band take their post-punk sound and expand it across a driving mix of electronics, new wave, art-pop, and club-influenced rhythms, with lyrics drawing from history, politics, religion, and philosophy.
The new music heralds the next chapter of a band with a lot to say, and a unique way to say it. Taking its title What’s A Heaven For? from Robert Browning’s Andrea del Sarto, the debut album explores encounters with Judas Iscariot, King Solomon, Emperor Nero, Robert Falcon Scott, the Wars of the Roses, a Syrian soldier stationed at Hadrian’s Wall, and Carl Sagan’s reflections on humanity’s place in the universe.
The first single from the new record, ‘Solomon’, shows Hallan at their brilliant and abrasive finest. Joshua’s gritty basslines, Josh’s shimmering guitar sweeps, and Adam’s crunched drum beats push the track forward, while lead singer Conor uses the biblical imagery and history of King Solomon to compel the listener to reflect on what truth is in today’s society, in a world where humanity is often too quick to be reactive to news.
