Collection: Tony Joe White

Tony Joe White was the Louisiana singer, songwriter and guitarist best known for Polk Salad Annie, his 1969 hit steeped in the swampy groove that became his signature. Born in Oak Grove in 1943, he drew together rock, blues and country in a way that felt loose, lived-in and unmistakably Southern.

He also wrote songs that travelled far beyond his own records. Brook Benton took White’s Rainy Night in Georgia into the US Top 5 in 1969, while Tina Turner later had an international hit with Steamy Windows. White kept recording well into later life, with albums including The Train I’m On, Black and White and Bad Mouthin’. He died in Tennessee in 2018.
