Ananta: Spirit of Coltrane

A centennial tribute to John Coltrane, Ananta: Spirit of Coltrane sees composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson honor a lifelong influence during the year of Coltrane’s 100th birthday. Atwood-Ferguson leads a 21-piece collective, balancing respect for the original compositions with the voices of today’s contemporary and improvised music community. The album features Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Flying Lotus and Immanuel Wilkins, plus an original composition featuring words by poet Aja Monet. “A Love Supreme, Pt. II,” “Central Park West,” “My Favorite Things,” “Naima” and “Giant Steps” balance familiarity with new interpretation, including transforming “Giant Steps” into a contemplative ballad. A tribute grounded in Coltrane’s spiritual legacy. Drawing on Atwood-Ferguson’s three-decade connection to Coltrane, Ananta reaches beyond jazz toward “cosmic music” designed to connect, uplift and empower listeners.
