Beautiful World - The EMI Years 1987-1993

A vital 5CD set of the studio work by Johnny Clegg and Savuka, the Johannesburg-formed, multi-racial group whose music stood firmly against Apartheid in South Africa.

It includes their four EMI albums: Third World Child (1987), Shadow Man (1988), Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World (1989) and the Grammy Award-nominated Heat, Dust And Dreams (1993).

Also here are non-album B-sides including Gumba Gumba Jive and Sengikhumbula Ubuso Bakho, plus remixes such as the Rain Man mix of Scatterlings Of Africa from the Oscar-winning 1988 film soundtrack and the 10-minute-plus Siyayalanda (The Love House Dub).

Formed after the end of Juluka, Savuka saw Clegg blend Western rock and pop with Zulu guitar, music from Zimbabwe and Zaire, and Latin American rhythms. Fluent in Zulu and known as the “white Zulu”, he performed to both black and white audiences.

Key songs include Asimbonanga (Mandela), covered by Joan Baez in 1987, Scatterlings Of Africa, Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World, and One (Hu)man One Vote, written for David Webster. Savuka ended after Heat, Dust and Dreams when Dudu "Zulu" Ndlovu was murdered; The Crossing (Osiyeza) is dedicated to him.
