Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love finds the Scottish singer embracing soul, funk and bruised romanticism with remarkable confidence. Released in 2014, his third album gives his gravelly voice room to stretch, moving between intimate tenderness and explosive, desperate intensity.

Opener “Scream (Funk My Life Up)” sets the mood with swaggering rhythms, sharp brass and a vocal that sounds deliciously unrestrained. “Let Me Down Easy” brings smoky elegance, while “One Day” captures the ache of longing without losing its melodic warmth. These songs draw on classic soul, yet Nutini’s personality keeps the record from feeling like an exercise in nostalgia.

The centrepiece is “Iron Sky”, a slow, powerful ascent built around a speech from Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator. Nutini delivers it with conviction, turning personal vulnerability into something broader and defiant. “Better Man” offers a gentler highlight, its emotional directness showing how effective he can be without the grand gestures.

Occasionally, the interludes interrupt the momentum, and the arrangements can feel overstuffed. Nevertheless, the performances carry real weight. Caustic Love is sensual, restless and deeply felt: an album that expands Nutini’s musical range while making the most of a voice capable of sounding wounded, seductive and triumphant within the same phrase.
