Coles Corner

Richard Hawley's first album for Mute, Coles Corner, is a follow-up to his previous albums on Setanta, Late Night Final (2001) and Lowedges (2003).

Recorded at Yellowarch studio in Sheffield, Hawley's hometown, this beautiful album is filled with nostalgia, emotion, and romance. The album's orchestral splendour blends with earthy rock and roll, featuring songs that are both intimate and soaring.

Hawley, known for his deep and low voice, sings with honesty and sincerity. His wise songs reveal the truths of the heart, illuminated by moonlight.

The title track, "Coles Corner," is a string-led, alone-in-a-crowd song where Hawley's narrator walks the city at night. The song pays homage to an old meeting place in Sheffield, Coles Corner, now the site of John Lewis.

Hawley's unique sound recognizes the genius of 50s production from Sun Studios without imitation.
