Luis Vasquez's Criminal is a confessional work that delves into themes of shame and guilt stemming from his violent childhood in the 80s Mojave Desert. Through this album, Vasquez confronts his inner demons, battling with self-hatred, insecurity, and the fear of becoming a person he despises.

Criminal marks a significant chapter in Vasquez's self-exploration, both artistically and emotionally. His journey began as a young musician in Oakland, where he sought to process his difficult upbringing through music. Drawing inspiration from krautrock and Post-Punk, Vasquez's debut album under the moniker The Soft Moon was released in 2010 to critical acclaim.

Subsequent albums like Zeros and Deeper showcased Vasquez's evolution as an artist, with a shift towards more introspective and personal lyrics. Deeper in particular delved into themes of childhood trauma and anxiety, setting the stage for the raw emotion and vulnerability found in Criminal.
