Released in May 2018, TV Girl’s Death of a Party Girl wraps romantic disappointment, fading youth and social anxiety in deceptively inviting indie pop. Produced by Brad Petering, its sample-driven arrangements combine hazy melodies, clipped beats and nostalgic textures, creating music that feels comforting even when the stories turn sour.

“Blue Hair” is the standout: a bittersweet portrait of changing identity, growing older and watching someone move beyond the version of themselves you remember. Its sweetness captures the album’s appeal, balancing memorable hooks with an uncomfortable emotional distance. “Lonely Girls” explores isolation within relationships, while “Cynical One” makes emotional defensiveness sound almost seductive.

Elsewhere, “King of Echo Park” sketches Los Angeles nightlife through an entertainingly unflattering character study, and “Stupid Actress” examines ambition, fantasy and the machinery of Hollywood. Petering’s conversational delivery suits these songs, allowing sharp observations and casual cruelty to emerge without theatrical emphasis.

The closing title track darkens the atmosphere, tracing the point where partying becomes routine and pleasure gives way to exhaustion. Across the record, attractive surfaces conceal loneliness, resentment and dwindling possibilities. That tension makes Death of a Party Girl compelling: its songs drift pleasantly past, then leave behind something considerably sadder than their melodies initially suggest.
