A new Lost Animal album is rare enough to feel like an event. It’s been a decade since Ex Tropical landed in 2011, following You Yang in 2016, and Give Some Get Some arrives with all the strange beauty and singular vision that defines Jarrod Quarrell.
Though essentially a solo project, Lost Animal carries the scale of a full band. Keys, synths, gently plucked strings and soft horns shape a vivid, transportive sound, while tracks like Do That Thing and Infinity Repeats lean into bass, drum machine swing and wah guitar.
A key shift here is Dan Luscombe of The Drones, stepping in as producer and live band member. Shags no longer handles bass full time, though he appears on a couple of tracks. Above all, Quarrell’s lyricism leads the way, searching inward on songs like I’m a Bird Now and Never is Forever.
