Sofy arrives with her debut album How To Perform Magic, a bold, intimate record from the Leicester-born songwriter. Written and recorded in Camden with longtime collaborator and bandmate Edward Denholm in total isolation, it was later mixed by Mercury Prize-nominated Nathan Boddy, known for work with Olivia Dean, Oklou and Nilufer Yanya.
Pulling from touchstones like Massive Attack, early The xx and Radiohead, the album moves through trip hop, garage rock, britpop and breakbeats. Guitar-led melancholy, dusty rhythms, reverb-soaked vocals and low-slung basslines carry songs shaped by digital burnout, industry frustration, dejection, imposter syndrome and the emotional weight of the late 20s.
There is catharsis here too. For Sofy, songwriting becomes a kind of sorcery, turning chaos into something tangible and personal. How To Perform Magic is unflinching, honest and full of purpose, marking her largest and most personal chapter yet.
