Kofelgschroa come from Oberammergau. Matthias Meichelböck (tenor horn), Martin von Mücke (helicontuba), Michael von Mücke (flugelhorn, guitar) and Maxi Pongratz (accordion) founded their band in 2007. At that time they were still called Kofelmusik and played close to traditional folk music; their name comes from Oberammergau's local mountain, the Kofel. But when the "Gschroa", the screaming, was added, their music also changed.
Because the Gschroa on top of the Kofel is for the band also an image for their homeland reference, which they themselves describe as schizophrenic. "Their minimalist, yet rapidly undulating brass develops an amazing groove," found the "SüdGermane Zeitung," and indeed: the dialect is distinctive, the instruments are still folk music, the one- to three-part singing meets or misses. The lyrics are spoken, shouted, sung and then gladly offset.
"Kofelgschroa cultivate a kind of valentinesque Dadaism," wrote "Die Welt". "... As if the Pogues, fired up by a couple of half-Augustinians, were playing a Balkan band for a dance."
