The League of Ordinary Gentlemen, commonly known as DLDGG, emerged in 2012 from the ruins of the defunct superpunk. Their seven regular albums (+one best of) captivate with their version of pop music, which they cling to with refreshing stubbornness. Since then, they've courageously straddled the divide. Inspired by the original punk idea (you don't have to be a virtuoso to make great music), they've been releasing great pop songs for years, heavily influenced by the three big "M"s (Madness, Motown, Modern Lovers). With a refreshing uncompromising attitude, they embrace and cement their outsider status in equal measure. They either have no desire to pander to the zeitgeist in order to maximize success, or, which may also be the case, they simply haven't thought about it yet. The League's goal has always been and always will be to ensure that every album track can also be a single. On "Egg Benedict," they've essentially achieved it. DLDGG is refreshingly far removed from the contemporary state theater and feature-page rock that's so popular here. Whenever a new Liga album is released, it's as if the window in a slightly musty apartment is opened on the first warm day of spring and a wonderfully light breeze blows in. It's great that it exists!
