Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond first made their debut at San Francisco’s Black Hawk. Their calling card was clear: break down racial barriers, push back against McCarthy-era prejudice, open jazz up through ballads, popular songs and classical themes, and explore an almost endless range of complex rhythms.
