The Fashionettes’ Losin’ Control is a real northern soul gem. The Mary Saxton version was a monster at Wigan Casino, but this clearly superior take stayed unreleased for 40 years until Kent Records’ Ady Croasdell unearthed it and cut Keb Darge a dub.
Keb took it straight onto his next tour with DJ Shadow, who told him it was his favourite record in the set. A powerful tune indeed.
The Performers’ I Can’t Stop You is a Mirwood release with some of that trademark Mirwood sound stripped back, leaving a more sophisticated stomper than usual. It was somewhat overlooked in the northern scene’s heyday, but feels just right for today’s younger, sharper-eared crowd.
