The Thelonious Monk four CD set covers the years 1947 to 1955, excluding his later golden period with Riverside Records.
Nonetheless, many of Monk's most enigmatic tunes - "Evidence", "Misterioso", "Blue Monk", "Straight No Chaser", and "Round About Midnight" - were composed during his time with Blue Note and Prestige Records.
These tracks are included in this collection, along with a booklet by Proper's classic-jazz archivist Joop Visser.
Monk's unique approach to ballads is showcased in the sparse phrasing and suspenseful pauses of the 1947 recording "Ruby My Dear", while his unconventional horn writing shines on "Monk's Mood" and "Round About Midnight".
The collaboration with saxophonist Sonny Rollins on tracks like "Round About Midnight" demonstrates the synergy between the two artists.
One of the standout performances is Monk's 1954 rendition of "Round About Midnight", featuring bassist Percy Heath and drummer Art Blakey.
This trio solidifies their reputation as one of the best ensembles Monk ever worked with.
Overall, this set provides a valuable introduction to Monk's early work.
