Newport 1958

Recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island on July 3, 1958, this set finds the Dave Brubeck Quartet paying tribute to Duke Ellington with a programme largely drawn from his repertoire.

The inspired choice of Jump for Joy brings some of the set’s most magical moments, while Perdido opens up into an extended workout for Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck. Liberian Suite Dance No. 3 is one movement from Ellington’s Liberian Suite, premiered in late 1947.

There’s also The Duke, Brubeck’s elegant tribute to Ellington, showcasing Desmond’s lyrical alto, plus an exciting finale with C Jam Blues, with Joe Morello very much in the spotlight.
