Released in 2013, Opposites captures Biffy Clyro thinking on an enormous scale, stretching their muscular alternative rock across a double album packed with ambition, anxiety and huge choruses. The Scottish trio balance their taste for awkward rhythms and jagged riffs with increasingly confident, accessible songwriting.

“Different People” establishes the scope, building patiently before erupting into a glorious release. “Black Chandelier” turns unease into an irresistible anthem, while “Biblical” delivers one of Simon Neil’s most affecting vocal performances, its emotional force growing through repetition and carefully judged dynamics.

The arrangements give the record much of its character. “Spanish Radio” brings brass into the mix, and “Stingin’ Belle” combines guitars with bagpipes, making its grand gestures feel rooted in the band’s identity. James Johnston’s bass and Ben Johnston’s drumming keep even the most elaborate passages grounded in physical power.

Across twenty tracks, the quality inevitably fluctuates, and a tighter selection might have sharpened the impact. Yet the generous running time also creates room for stranger textures and quieter emotional turns.

Beneath the polished production lies a convincing sense of strain and resilience. Opposites succeeds because its scale serves the songs: an expansive, occasionally excessive statement from a band determined to push forward.
