Eva May’s Softly / I Saw Three Ships pairs an original Christmas song with a reimagining of the traditional English carol. Written with Pat Benjamin of Tara Clerkin Trio, “Softly” combines layered vocals, piano, synthesiser and melodica, bringing together folk, choral music, minimalism and avant-garde jazz.
On “I Saw Three Ships”, May’s vocals meet James Bonney’s subtle guitar playing, with e-bow and electronic post-production lending the carol an unsettling edge.
