Huford Brown, performing as U Brown, was part of a new generation of reggae MCs who emerged in the late 1970s, building on pioneers of the game, most notably Daddy U Roy. Early on he signed to Richard Branson’s Virgin Frontline label, recording at both Channel One and King Tubby’s with many of the island’s top musicians.
At the same time, he set up his own Hit Sound label, recording soulful roots sides that built on a deep love of reggae’s short history while also moving into the emerging sounds of dancehall.
David Hill of Soul Revivers has compiled the best of U Brown’s production work from labels including Hit Sound and Tanker. This first vinyl compilation of Brown’s work includes previously unknown dubplate mixes by Al Campbell, including Give The People, plus cuts by Vincent Taylor, Delroy Wilson, Bobby Ellis & Deadly Headly and Carlton Livingstone.
