De La Soul's Stakes Is High catches the group at a real turning point: older, sharper, and fully dialled in. Released in 1996, it was their fourth album and the first without Prince Paul, making space for a tougher, more stripped-back sound.

J Dilla helped shape the title track, and that lead single went on to become one of De La Soul's defining statements, peaking at No. 53 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The album itself reached No. 4 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
