this extended, definitive cd includes the entire recorded works of cult post-punk band department s. based around their unreleased 1981 album 'sub-stance', it also features the singles 'is vic there?', 'going left right' and 'i want', b-sides and bonus live tracks. formed from the ashes of london band guns for hire, department s released three memorable alt.pop singles in 1980/81, including 'going left right', 'i want' and 'is vic there?', the latter reaching number 22 on the national singles chart in april 1981 and earning the band three appearances on top of the pops and a smash hits cover. despite this success, and a busy live schedule, their impressive genre-defying debut album 'sub-stance' (produced by 'parallel lines' engineer david tickle) remained unreleased after the band split. 22 tracks, 72 minutes of music, detailed sleeve notes.
