Contour's debut album for Mexican Summer, Take Off from Mercy, broadens the South Carolina artist's already-singular voice, integrating guitar-driven music, Tropicalia, the blues and the unvarnished honesty of rap music into a vivid portrayal of a long day's journey into night. After exploring noirish, sample-driven R&B on critically-acclaimed releases like Onwards! (2022), Love Suite (2021) and Weight (2021), Lucas now steps out as an incisive lyricist and vital songwriter. Aided by his co-producer Omari Jazz and esteemed collaborators such as Mndsgn and Saul Williams, Contour is a key member of a distinct cohort of young artists weaving the traditions of Black music into modern, avant-garde songcraft.
