Crying Laughing arrive on Hausu Mountain with their debut album, Talking. The Baltimore quintet came together in 2024 with a sharp idea: saxophone-led polymetric composition rooted in Reich, Glass, and Riley, charged by post-punk energy and groove, plus the rhythmic feel of Moondog’s street recordings.
There’s real precision here: dual saxophone lines, a lock-groove rhythm section, and arrangements shaped through endless rehearsal. It leans closer to a new music ensemble than a standard rock band, but the live-in-the-studio takes keep it loose, physical, and full of the spark that comes from friends making music together.
Talking moves from tight melodic lattices to head-nodding grooves and moody, melted harmonies, all reflecting the band’s collaborative approach. Even this early on, Crying Laughing sound deeply connected, with plenty of room to keep pushing their shared language somewhere new.
