Grimez is a beat fanatic. Born and raised in South Florida, he drew inspiration from entertainers and DJs like Jam Pony Express. As a teenager, Grimez would spend hours at the flea market, flipping through catalogs and picking up tapes for his collection. He relocated to Ohio in the 90s, where he fell in love with sampling and began producing music of his own.

For each Doctor Bionic record, Grimez pulls in a cast of highly talented musicians from the local scene. In the studio, the group of musicians toss out ideas and improvise while Grimez runs the board. Later, he arranges the tracks and establishes a theme for a full-length record. “I’m always working on an album, but sometimes I’m not sure what the artwork or title will be,” Grimez explained. The art often inspires the overall message, which is reflected in short interludes of vocal samples interspersed between the instrumental jams.

The cover of The Beat Zealot features a lone adventurer standing on a mountain that overlooks a distant city. Is he on his way toward civilization, or is he fleeing?
