In the late 60s and early 70s, Jamaican deejays took the energy of the dancehall onto record, shaping four decades of island music and laying down a blueprint that would echo through rap and hip hop worldwide. The art of the toast moved from quick interjections to full-length lyrical performances over rhythm tracks.
Sound system legends including U Roy, I Roy, Dennis Alcapone, Big Joe, Little Joe and Prince Jazzbo became recording stars with hit singles and albums, followed through the 70s by mic men like Dillinger, Dr. Alimantado, Clint Eastwood, Jah Stitch and Trinity.
