the us kent and modern labels recorded and released some of the finest blues and soul sides of the late 1960s. only a fraction of what they recorded has been released on cd to date, but ace aims to rectify that with a short series of compilations that will extensively digitise this end of the bihari brothers' catalogue over the course of the next year or so. ace's revitalised reissue programme kicks off by collecting up at least one version of every recording made for modern and/or kent by al smith aka al king and arthur k adams. neither made enough recordings to fill a cd of their own, but they are linked: arthur plays guitar on most of the al king sides. among the 22 tracks there are eight previously unissued performances, and seven completely unissued songs - a true treasure trove for all fans of late-era west coast blues. this cd should appeal deservedly to a new generation of vintage blues and new breed r&b fans alike.
