Trappings of Sleep

Trappings of Sleep brings Caroline Davis, Grey Mcmurray, and Qasim Naqvi together in a deeply immersive meeting of alto saxophone, guitar, electronics, and drums. Moving between intimacy and intensity, the trio explores connection and the spaces between sound and silence, alowing each instrument to respond to and reshape the others in real time.

The title contains its own paradox. Despite implications of captivity, sleep remains the oldest technology of escape, a private cosmos into which the mind launches itself without engines. These pieces treat dreaming as space travel. They drift and listen, searching for life elsewhere only to find habitable zones inside the relational field of their instruments. The trio’s Goldilocks zone is a liminal swath of oxygen where difference is breathable. With chamber-like patience and improvisational risk now part of jazz’s living condition, Trappings of Sleep feels current, imagining the future as a navigational trajectory.
