This album represents an important moment in all-women bands. Ex-punk indie popper 61-year old Ruth Miller found that there aren't many women drummers or bass players waiting to join bands so she decided to teach some female non-musicians how to play. The first Unglamorous band, The Verinos formed in summer 2021. After the band's first gig, there were other women of all ages keen to try forming an Unglamorous band - a genre marked by simple music, influenced by old punk and garage bands, but with the wit, snarky lyrics and attitude of women right now. There were workshops, a 66 day challenge and now there's the Unglamorous Sampler with 12 songs by 8 new all-women bands formed in Leicester. They're not looking to follow the usual rock pathways because they've created their own scene. Songs on the album have the refreshing rawness that not many record labels would take a chance on these days; there's weird, smartarse, scary, no-nonsense and feelgood tunes. The vinyl gatefold release is a beautiful, journalistic document that tells the story of the bands with lots of photos, and the CD offers a scaled-down version.
