Union

Yes’s Union (1991) brought together two parallel versions of the band for one of the most ambitious line-ups in their history. Combining members of the classic Yes group with the musicians from Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, the album features Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Rick Wakeman, Tony Kaye, Bill Bruford and Alan White.

Musically, Union moves between progressive rock, polished early-’90s production and the more melodic, arena-sized sound Yes had developed during the previous decade. Tracks such as “I Would Have Waited Forever,” “Lift Me Up” and “The More We Live – Let Go” showcase the album’s mix of intricate musicianship, expansive arrangements and soaring vocal harmonies.

Although its complicated recording process and huge cast of contributors made Union an unusual chapter in the Yes story, the project ultimately reunited the band’s different generations and led to a major tour featuring eight Yes members on stage together. It remains a fascinating snapshot of a legendary group attempting to reconcile its progressive roots with its constantly evolving sound.
