JPEGMAFIA released Veteran on January 19, 2018, as his second studio album under Deathbomb Arc and Republic Records. The album received widespread critical acclaim, propelling the Baltimore rapper to the forefront of contemporary and experimental hip hop.

Veteran was recognized by NME, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Noisey, and Spin as one of the top 100 albums of 2018. In 2019, Pitchfork also included it at number 171 in their list of best albums of the decade. The album's standout track, "1539 N. Calvert," remains JPEGMAFIA's most streamed song.

According to Pitchfork, Veteran is described as "Entirely self-produced, a remarkable exercise in sound and texture. At its best, the production incorporates the frayed edges of each element into the atmosphere, creating a mess of distortion that works percussively and melodically."
