An Infinite Antenna

On An Infinite Antenna, Montréal sound artist Steve Bates opens up his palette, folding leftfield synths, deconstructed drum machine, pointillist guitar and radiostatic haze into his field-recording and signal-bending approach. It feels more ambient than his 2022 Constellation debut, but also more packed with melody, movement and detail.

Coming from Prairie anarcho-punk, Bates founded Winnipeg’s Send + Receive in 1998, later moving to Montréal to work at Hexagram. After releases on ORAL_records and the Casio SK-1-driven All The Things That Happen, he pushes further here while keeping a punk sense of concision.

Built from recordings made between 2023 and 2025 in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Greece and Saskatchewan, the album moves like a slowly scanned radio dial. Highlights include Pink pink pink pink…pink pink, Green as a ghost, Battles and sieges and street trees, Easier sad than done, Waste, songs of the world, Disaster loans and Swamps and factories.
