And We Wept the Black Ocean Within is the debut release from the Brooklyn trio on Neurot, featuring members of Blood and Time, Battle of Mice, Red Sparrowes, Unsane, Tombs, and more. Despite the dark themes of drowning, destruction, and despair, the album is anything but posthumous.
Guitarist Josh Graham, also known as the visual director for Neurosis, leads the band as the unreliable narrator, delivering first-person lyrics that explore varying stages of grief. The album's protagonist remains shrouded in mystery, with hints to the cover artwork and references to 'bog bodies' from the Celtic Iron Age.
The haunting harmonic drone of And We Wept the Black Ocean Within creates a sense of slow suffocation in waves of noise, rather than straightforward pummeling. The album moves in versicle form between voice and instruments, densely packed with suspense, tension, and eruptive release.
Master engineer Joel Hamilton captures the band's sound with slack-tuned guitars, subtle keyboard lines, slithering bass, and lunging rhythms. The vocals add to the intricate layers, evoking a deep sea water pressure that immerses listeners in the music.
With jutting sonic surprises throughout, the debut of A Storm of Light is a suspenseful and captivating work that draws inspiration from masterful cinema and literature, as well as the monolithic and epic sounds of its musical predecessors.
