London’s jazz-pop futurists Dance Lessons have announced their debut album Beginners: a lush, emotionally charged record that redefines the edges of alt-pop and jazz. Written and produced by the trio Anne, Nat & Tom, and mixed by Andrew Maury (Lizzo, Kimbra, Post Malone), it lands on July 25th.
Formed in 2020, the collective released their first singles mid-pandemic to critical acclaim and have been carving their own lane ever since. Their mission: blur the lines between jazz and pop while making bold, emotionally rich music with high-gloss production. Across its 10 tracks, Beginners explores “our constantly evolving relationships to each other.” With influences ranging from Kate Bush and Chic to Solange and Róisín Murphy, the album aims to “trick people who say they don’t like jazz into really digging it.” Their sound draws comparisons to SAULT, Jungle, Jai Paul and Blood Orange, but remains unmistakably their own.
