Marking five years since Bernard Haitink’s passing, Decca completes this limited-edition box set series in fitting style. Following the landmark Concertgebouw Orchestra and London editions, this final volume brings together a remarkable set of recordings from one of the great conductors of the modern era.
The focus here is Haitink with three world-class orchestras: the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker and Wiener Philharmoniker. There’s also Mahler and Poulenc with the European Community Youth Orchestra, Fidelio from Dresden with Jessye Norman, and an early stereo pairing of Mozart and Stravinsky with David Oistrakh.
Most intriguing of all is music by Turnage recorded with the Chicago Symphony. This 31-CD edition comes in original jackets and includes a booklet featuring insightful notes by Andrew Stewart.
