Title

Muse reached a thrilling balance between eccentricity and accessibility on Black Holes and Revelations, their fourth album, released in 2006. Its mix of electronic pulses, thunderous rock and extravagant melodrama turns political paranoia and romantic longing into songs built for enormous crowds.

“Take a Bow” opens with gathering menace, its spiralling synthesisers establishing the album’s apocalyptic atmosphere. “Starlight” answers with emotional appeal, carried by an unforgettable piano motif and Chris Wolstenholme’s driving bass. “Supermassive Black Hole” adds a slinky, danceable swagger, proving the trio could broaden their sound without sacrificing their identity.

The strongest moments combine ambition with discipline. “Map of the Problematique” channels anxiety through relentless rhythmic momentum, while “Assassin” unleashes intricate drumming and tightly wound aggression. Matt Bellamy’s falsetto, guitar acrobatics and taste for excess remain central, but Dominic Howard and Wolstenholme give the spectacle its formidable foundation.

There are moments when the lyrical grandstanding feels heavy handed, yet the music’s conviction makes the absurdity enjoyable. Closing track “Knights of Cydonia” is the ultimate example: a galloping collision of space rock, western soundtrack drama and communal defiance.

Bold, colourful and entertaining, Black Holes and Revelations captures Muse expanding their horizons while keeping their songwriting sharp and their energy irresistible.
