Fresh from inspiring comparisons like The XX and London Grammar with her debut single The Cure, ascendant British songwriter Stevie Parker now releases his first EP Blue. Produced by the Grammy winner Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Sia), the EP’s other new tracks also tread the fine line between lovelorn yearning and a sense of nostalgia for the not so distant past. Blue contrasts sweeping, ethereal sounds with a “I can’t get over you” hook of striking directness, while Siren finds Parker weaving her mesmerising vocal over a foreboding mix of melancholic synths and supple percussion. The Blue EP is completed by Parker’s interpretation of Joe Jackson’s 1979 classic It’s Different For Girls. Whereas the original reversed the expected gender roles of its era, the song takes on an entirely contemporary context when delivered by an artist who is establishing a reputation with something compelling to say about modern sexuality and relationships.
