Rui Gabriel's debut LP Compassion combines ethereal pop with ‘80s synth textures and slacker-rock charm. Drawing inspiration from artists like Matthew E. White, BC Camplight, and Conor Oberst, Gabriel's album explores the themes of growing up and personal growth.
The album features 10 vibrant tracks that blend ethereal pop with slacker-rock and piano-driven dance music. It serves as a showcase of Gabriel's evolution as an artist and his journey towards self-discovery.
The creative process for Compassion began in 2018 when Gabriel was living in New Orleans, leading a carefree life focused on music and little responsibility. However, as his life changed with settling down and impending fatherhood, Gabriel's songwriting evolved to reflect his new priorities and experiences.
The songs on Compassion touch on themes of youthful carelessness and newfound responsibilities, providing a poignant look at the process of getting older. Gabriel's unique perspective as a South American immigrant living in the United States for over a decade adds depth and authenticity to the album's storytelling.
Compared to his work with Lawn, where he explores frenetic post-punk sounds, Rui Gabriel showcases more straightforward pop sensibilities and highlights his singing voice on Compassion. Collaborations with artists like Kate Teague and Stef Chura add layers of depth and infectiousness to the record.
Co-produced by Gabriel and Nicholas Corson, Compassion is a warm, generous, colorful, and adventurous album that encapsulates the essence of change and coming-of-age, particularly for someone transitioning into their thirties.
