Misfits released their last album, Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood, in December 1983, marking the departure of founding member and lead vocalist, Glenn Danzig.

The album, released on Danzig's Plan 9 label, showcased a harder and faster hardcore punk sound compared to their earlier works. Often referred to simply as "Earth A.D." by fans, the original 9-song LP was later reissued with three additional tracks from the Die, Die My Darling EP: "Die, Die My Darling", "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?", and "We Bite".

According to Danzig, the songs "Bloodfeast" and "Death Comes Ripping" were initially intended for Samhain's debut release but were included in the Misfits' final record as a last-minute effort to salvage the band.

Metallica covered "Die, Die My Darling" for their 1998 album Garage Inc., as well as "Green Hell", originally featured in their 1987 release, Garage Days Re-Revisited, in a medley with "Last Caress". Additionally, British extreme metal band Cradle of Filth covered "Death Comes Ripping" for their 1999 album From the Cradle to Enslave.
