After hearing The Beatles' North American debut album at eight years old, Al Di Meola knew he wanted to be a musician. Just 11 years later, Chick Corea recruited him to replace Bill Connors in Return to Forever, alongside Stanley Clarke and Lenny White.

His time in the band lasted only two years, but it lined up with their career peak. Around the group's breakup, he released Land of the Midnight Sun, then followed it a year later with Elegant Gypsy, where his fast electric runs and lyrical acoustic passages came fully into focus.
