Radio legend Frankie Crocker was the star of New York's airwaves for two decades, leaving behind him a legacy that saw him described as the 'Muhammad Ali' of radio, not just for his fame, but for his arrogance and confidence. Whilst heading up stations not just as a DJ, but as an influential programme controller he parlayed his notoriety into film appearances as both a personality and an actor, and as a recording artist, fronting up his Heart & Soul Orchestra. He also skirted around controversy before leaving radio to become a presenter on MTV's more adult station VH-1 on its launch in 1985. However, none of this would have happened without his taste in music, which saw him pioneering a presenting style that he described as 'The Total Black Experience In Sound', encapsulated here. If Frankie Crocker isn't on your radio, your radio isn't really on!
