Giles Corey is the solo project of Have a Nice Life’s Dan Barrett. First released in 2011, the self-titled debut turns depression, death, history and the paranormal into something intimate and strangely beautiful. Over the years, it has built a cult following, with listeners often describing it in ritual or religious terms.
Built largely from acoustic instrumentation, the record still feels crushing, with guitar and piano buried beneath ghostly choirs, organ, field recordings and sudden walls of sound. Songs emerge from near silence and build toward cathartic outbursts, with Barrett’s voice at the centre.
Integral to Giles Corey is a 150-page book, available with select versions or separately from The Flenser. This edition has been remastered by Richard Chowenhill of Agriculture and includes A Landless Earth, a bonus track never before officially released.
