The album is an ode to The Sex Pistol’s classic ‘God Save The Queen’. The first two singles were ‘God Save The Streets PT 1’ and ‘Vex’ whilst ‘Sin City’ features Wretch 32. The album was carefully crafted by some of the best minds in music and it is a deeply thought provoking project.
He may have been releasing music for over a decade but Tottenham rapper Avelino hadn’t felt ready to drop his debut album until he knew he was ready to compete with the all-time greats. Setting such a high bar might be an obstacle to some but for Avelino approaching difficult situations with positivity and a vision for the future is what motivates him. The result is God Save The Streets, a career-defining body of work that marks him out as a U.K. rapper able to blend heavy-hitting lyrics with memorable wordplay and an inspirational message.
God Save The Streets is a career defining piece of work and the grandest statement to date from one of the UK scene’s best-respected voices. Executive produced by Wretch 32 and overseen by Fraser T Smith, it blends heavy-hitting lyrics with memorable wordplay, its main objective being to inspire change in his community, as Avelino states: “It’s not as simple as ‘put the knives down.’ You have to appeal to a person’s state of mind. If you can get someone to work on their mindset and recognise that they have choices then eventually they don’t relate to crime and violence.”
