souther still formed in london in 2001 and their sound has been likened to artists such as galaxie 500, grant lee phillips, neil young and gram parsons, and while there is a tip of the hat to those american influences the lyrics are mostly rooted in an albeit slightly dislocated london - an urban folk rock blues. the first souther still album, the open plan (fairmount gas records), was released in 2003. despite limited distribution it served to promote the bands early work and built a loyal following. dizziness and darkness (open plan records, 2007) showed a strengthening in the writing and led to many favourable reviews in the british and european music press. in 2008, after a change in the band line-up, songwriters bradley putze and kevin stokes began work on songs for a third album. seeking to expand the bands eclectic sound, new members and session players were brought in, providing piano, organ, cello and pedal steel. with great wild street (feed dog records), souther still have delivered an album of mysterious urban folk blues and live wire americana, singing of william blake and the heart%u2019s shipwrecks, of londons frayed beauty and the lure of lost highways.
