Henry J Darger

Whilst on tour with his band Gotan Project in the USA, Philippe Cohen Solal took some time out to visit the Folk Art Museum in New York City and found himself standing in wonder before a piece created by the artist Henry Darger, when he noticed that the painting had been loaned to the museum by a Kiyoko Lerner ... coincidentally Philippe had that very day arranged to meet up with Kiyoko, who was a friend of a friend and also a huge fan of tango music. This coincidence is the origin of the artistic adventure that has led to the creation of this musical project. Philippe began working with his friend Mike Lindsay of the group Tunng, together they have created new folk songs inspired by Henry Darger's unpublished songs lyrics and writings. In order to realize their vision and inspired by Darger's song list, they drafted in the help of the vocal prodigy Adam Glover and the half-crazy and half angelic musical talent that is Hannah Peel (The Magnetic North). They have given Darger's visual world a musical dimension, adding melody created by vintage guitars, synths, children's instruments, string symphonies and weather reports.
