High Dependency Unit — Neil Phillips (bass, guitar), Tristan Dingemans (guitar, vocals), and Constantine (Dino) Karlis (drums, percussion, synth, samples) first made waves after moving from Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay to Ōtepoti Dunedin, carving out a sound as heavy and expansive as The Gordons before them, and Jakob after. The Higher EP (1997) captured them at their peak, proving that HDU’s adventurous spirit was as strong in the studio as it was live. Remastered for vinyl by Bob Weston (Chicago Mastering Service, Shellac) and celebrated by the late UK DJ John Peel, this 2025 12" reissue of Higher cements it as a landmark of New Zealand’s post-rock and experimental music legacy.
