Two of the great chapters in reggae music's history were the DJ phenomenon that conquered the sound systems in the 1970's and the dub plate specials that allowed the deejays to explore a tune in the first place. Mix them with the original vocal dubbed in at various points and you get a fantastic melting pot that lifts a tune and can take it almost anywhere it likes.
