Just Like You

Formed in Massachusetts in 1969 under the name Mask, Pugsley Munion grew out of three teenage musicians’ desire to leave the cover-band circuit behind and perform their own music. Combining hard rock with psychedelic and progressive influences, the trio quickly developed a powerful sound that caught the attention of the newly revived J&S Records. The band was invited to New York City to record at the legendary Bell Sound Studios, one of the city’s first eight-track recording facilities. Forced to change their name, the group adopted the unforgettable, tongue-in-cheek name Pugsley Munion. Originally conceived as an album titled ‘Three in One’, the sessions were recorded in just two days. The band expected to return to complete overdubs, remix the tracks, and finish the project. Instead, J&S Records released the recordings in their rough, unfinished state, changed the album title to Just Like You, misplaced the original cover artwork, and issued the record without the band’s approval. Despite these setbacks, the album received regional radio airplay and eventually earned cult status among collectors of American heavy psychedelic rock.
